For most people, the word "pioneer" conjures up romantic visions of sturdy, courageous people who crossed physical frontiers of land and/or water alone, or who took their families, communities, and cultures with them into those uncharted territories. Once settled, their pioneering efforts shifted to starting new societies with new laws and new values; to building new homes, churches, and schools; and to learning new ways of thinking and doing, even while retaining much of their earlier heritage. In the frontier of higher education in the United States in the last half of the 19th century, then-physical training pioneers like Edward Hitchcock, Dudley Sargent and Dio Lewis, Delphine Hanna, and a bit later, Thomas Wood, Luther Gulick, Clark Heatherington and others, founded brand new programs, new departments and even entire new schools; they gave birth to a new profession; they had gymnasia built where none existed; they put in those buildings never-seen-before equipment and apparatus; and they developed new philosophies for the then-fledgling profession--some of which still guide the professional and cultural values of Kinesiology and Physical Education (KPE) today. In this article, the author provides some examples of modern-day pioneering in KPE, those whom in his opinion have recently made or are now making pioneering efforts in KPE in higher education.
