The International Development Research Centre: A Guide for the Canadian University Research Community = Le Centre de recherches pour le developpement international: guide a l'intention des scientifiques des universites Canadiennes.
Tillman, George; Wasilewski, Ania, Ed.
Written in both English and French this is a manual for the Canadian research community. It describes the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and its operations. The main objective of the IDRC is to assist scientists in developing countries to identify and conduct research into long term practical solutions to development problems. While it principally supports research conducted by Third World researchers, the Center also allocates about 18 percent of its annual program budget to cooperative projects. Within its core areas of interest, 23 percent of funds are allocated to integrating environmental, social, and economic policies; 18 percent to technology and environment; 20 percent to food systems under stress; 16 percent to information and communication for environment and development; 13 percent to health and the environment; and 10 percent to biodiversity. The role of the IDRC in Canadian research is detailed including information about establishing cooperative programs and contacting developing country researchers. Guidance is provided regarding the IDRC project approval process, project monitoring and evaluation, funding, and establishing contact with the IDRC. Lists of readings, IDRC regional offices, and IDRC governors are appended. (Contains 14 references.) (JLS)
