The Changing Shape of Corporations.
Wagner, June G.
Keying In, v13 n4 Mar 2003
This newsletter contains two articles dealing with the changing shape of corporations. The article "Trends in Business Culture" argues that Wal-Mart's emergence as the largest corporation in the United States reflects the larger economic shift in the U.S. economy from production of goods to provision of abstract goods such as services and information and discusses the impact of the following trends on corporations: the rise of information and communication technologies; globalization; doing business 24 hours per day 7 days per week; educated consumers; and the aging workforce. The article "Teaching the New Workplace Skills" explains how some U.S. corporations are keeping abreast of the constant changes in business and industry by teaching the skills needed for success in today's workplace. Particular attention is paid to the following topics: the skills and knowledge needs stemming from the increasing diversity of corporations employees, customers, investors, clients, and other stakeholders; traditional hierarchical ("pyramid") management structures versus new horizontal and cross-functional ("web") structures; self-directed, empowered employees; communication skills; decision-making skills; teamwork skills; leadership skills; and ways business educators can help students pursue the continual learning needed to meet the challenges of the new knowledge economy. A communication exercise, decision-making exercise, and 16-item resource list are included. (MN)
