New Directions in International Education.
Lambert, Richard D., Ed.; Heston, Alan W., Ed.
The Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, v449 May 1980
Twelve articles offer a sampling of a wide variety of interrelated studies, reports, and recommendations on international education. They all relate to that aspect of the educational system in the United States devoted to studying, writing, and teaching about other parts of the world. A key article discusses the findings and recommendations of the Presidential Commission on Foreign Language and International Studies. The article discusses the efforts of the Commission to set new directions in international education that encompass every level of the education system from kindergarten to graduate studies and that comprise many functions, including research, training of specialists, and exchanges. Other articles deal with a specific level of the educational system and with specialized aspects. Specifically these articles discuss the following: (1) interest in international studies in the 1930s; (2) the need to promote foreign language and culture study; (3) possible new directions in foreign language study in the schools; (4) research and training in international studies in U.S. universities; (5) an analysis by the Rand Corporation of the need for language and international studies training; (6) international studies in elementary and secondary education; (7) a survey of the Council on Learning's Education and World View project; (8) the federal exchange program (of foreign visitors); (9) study abroad and international exchanges; and (10) the linking of business schools with foreign language and international studies. A summary article attempts to fit the pieces into a framework and suggests some items for an action agenda for the field. Book reviews conclude the publication. (Author/NE)
