Theoretical Remarks on Combined Creative and Scholarly PhD Degrees in the Visual Arts
Elkins, James
Journal of Aesthetic Education, v38 n4 p22-31 Win 2004
One of the most interesting curricular developments in the field of studio art is the PhD in studio art. If it catches on in the U.S. as it has in the U.K., it may become the de facto terminal degree for artists who wish to teach, just as the MFA (the current terminal degree) became a practical necessity in the 1960s. The new degrees combine doctoral-level research, culminating in a full-length dissertation, with the creation of art in a studio setting. The raise all sorts of philosophic, economic, practical, and institutional problems. In the U.K. and Australia, the forms of these new degrees are already fixed. In the U.S. there is the opportunity to rethink them at a fundamental level. In this essay I set out the principal possibilities.
