Report on Focus on Elder Abuse Workshop (Regina, Saskachewan, May 31-June 1, 1989).

This report describes a 2-day elder abuse workshop, hosted by the Seniors' Education Centre, University Extension, University of Regina in 1989 and attended by 96 participants from across Saskatchewan, Canada. Included is the text from the keynote address by Geri McGrath, a social worker from the Psychogeriatrics Day Hospital, Seven Oaks General Hospital, Winnipeg, Manitoba. McGrath's speech provides an overview of the problem of elder abuse. A presentation by Ellen Gun, Director of Prosecution, Province of Saskatchewan, provides a detailed account of the process followed in dealing with cases of elder abuse, as dictated by the Criminal Code. A presentation by Mary Ellen Wellsch, Public Trustee for Saskatchewan, Department of Justice, explains how the proposed Dependent Adults Act could pertain to elder abuse and discusses what interventions are currently possible in terms of elder abuse. A presentation by Maurice Miron, senior consultant, Elder Abuse Prevention, Family Violence Prevention Branch, Health & Welfare Canada, Ottawa, provides an update on the national survey on elder abuse currently being conducted by the Ryerson Polytechnical Institute (Toronto, Canada). Recommendations are listed from sessions held to examine home care, human services, special care homes, and voluntary and family caregivers and seniors. A list of participants, their affiliations, addresses, and telephone numbers is appended, as are the Focus on Elder Abuse Workshop agenda, relevant workshop materials, and a list of the Elder Abuse Workshop Advisory Committee members.
