Preventing Gifted/Talented Children from Being Harmed by Bullying

A study done in 2006 found that two-thirds of gifted children reported having been bullied. All children are affected adversely by bullying but gifted children differ from other children in significant ways. Many are intense, sensitive and stressed by their own and others' high expectations and their ability, interests and behavior may make them vulnerable. If hard-working, high-achieving youth are not valued in a school, or are seen as odd, they will be mistreated by peers. Schools, and communities, need to decide if they will see gifted youth as unfairly privileged students who get "more than their share of the extra help" and who unfairly take all the awards--or if they will see their highest-achieving students as a source of glory and pride for their schools or communities. Are the highest-achieving youth "geeks" or the equivalent of a High School's star athletes? Both groups work hard to achieve their accomplishments. Both, as the result of a good head start and of disciplined effort, can do things that the average student cannot do. Both could be (and in some schools are) seen as bringing honor to the school. Some gifted and highly gifted youth seem more likely to be hurt emotionally by others' mean behavior. They may feel rejection intensely, may already have a sense of differentness that is intensified if others reject them, may sense the injustices inherent in others' behavior at an earlier age than other youth would. Some highly gifted youth may experience anxiety and worry more deeply than other youth. In this article, the author discusses ways one can approach lowering the rate of mistreatment toward high-achieving youth, and lowering the harm done by any teasing or other mistreatment they receive from peers.
