Teaching Mathematics with Computers 9-12.
New York State Education Dept., Albany.
This publication is designed to show how computers can be used effectively in secondary school mathematics curricula. Section I provides a description of the various types of software that could be incorporated into the secondary school mathematics curriculum. Procedures for evaluating the software and using it in a classroom or laboratory situation are discussed. Section II presents a model for the infusion of an ongoing component of computer instruction into New York State curricula. The focus is on a metacognitive approach to problem solving; examples are presented in the multi-step computer solutions to problems. Section III addresses the New York State Regents Action Plan which calls for a required second year of mathematics by presenting a computer mathematics course as an option for a local diploma. A list of topics is presented as a guide for course development, with a detailed lesson plan for one topic. Section IV proposes an advanced computer mathematics course, with suggested topics and approach. Section V provides two tables referencing software to specific content topics. Included in the appendices are two computer programs which teachers might use to illustrate the relevancy of using computers to solve real-world problems. (MNS)
