Undergraduate Research in the Human Sciences: Three Models
Collins, Nina; Mitstifer, Dorothy I.; Nelson Goff, Briana S.; Hymon-Parker, Shirley
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v101 n3 p24-31 2009
Undergraduate research in the sciences has been shown by numerous studies to enhance the educational experience. The Undergraduate Research Community (URC) founded in 2001 supports several initiatives that promote research in human sciences/family and consumer sciences including an online peer-reviewed journal specifically for undergraduate work, conferences and support for undergraduates to present papers, and online resources. Future initiatives of URC are presented. Three models of undergraduate research of institutional members of URC are described. Common threads among the three models include methods of recruiting student participants, strong faculty mentoring, and commitment to acceptable research methods. Suggestions are given for enhancement of undergraduate research in the human sciences/family and consumer sciences.
