A Case Study of a National University Research Project and Its Technological Innovation
Ziegel, Melina
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Teachers College, Columbia University
This case study examined the implementation of a major research endeavor in an institution of higher education, Trinity College, Dublin, in Ireland, with particular focus on the change process during the initiation of the project and the subsequent needs assessment and implementation of technological solutions. This study identified the stages, people, processes, and tools that were essential to build the research infrastructure to support the project's goal. The primary research question explored in this study was: What role did technological resources play in the development of a national research project?. This single case study, based on publicly available documents about the project, described the evolution of the technology-based research tools for the purpose of supporting a national, multi-component, longitudinal research study. The research in this case study documented how the steps followed during the initiation phase led to the development of technological solutions to support data collection in the implementation phase. A key finding of the analysis was how the growing capacity for technology development ultimately contributed to the development of technological tools, which in turn supported the overall project. This case study concluded with a reflection on the potential of this project and a discussion of the role technology played as one aspect of building the capacity of the project to contribute to Ireland's ability to develop a "knowledge-based" economy.
