Transformational Leadership and Teacher Motivation in Southwestern Arizona High Schools
Reynolds, Catherine L.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between transformational leadership and teacher motivation in Southwestern Arizona high schools. Teachers in a school district in Southwestern Arizona comprised of high schools were surveyed using two instruments, Leithwood and Jantzi's (1998) The Leadership and Management of Schools in conjunction with Hackman and Oldham's (1975) Job Diagnostic Survey. The hypothesis of this study was "Teacher motivation increases as transformational leadership increases." Data was analyzed using Cronbach's (1951) alpha, bivariate correlations, and linear regression at both the 0.01 and 0.05 levels of significance. Cronbach's (1951) alpha was used to calculate internal reliability for each construct and job dimension. Inter-correlations were calculated for constructs and job dimensions separately in order to establish construct validity. The constructs were stacked to use as the overall variable of transformational leadership and correlations tests were performed with teacher motivation, a variable stacked from the job dimensions. Data was analyzed together with the correlations to determine if teacher motivation increased as transformational leadership increased. Based on the findings of this study, the research demonstrated a weak directionally negative correlation between teacher motivation and transformational leadership leading to the rejection of the hypothesis. Although the significance established was quite weak, it was determined that teacher motivation decreased as transformational leadership decreased supporting an overall statistically positive correlation between transformational leadership and teacher motivation.
