Raising Children Who Refuse To Be Raised.
Ziegler, Dave
This book is about the struggle of raising children who work against your every effort as a parent or clinician to help them succeed in the world. Specifically, this book is about children who often do not respond to approaches offered in books and parent training programs for "normal" children. There are other books that address individual categories of special needs children, such as hyperactive children, sexually abused children or any number of other problems that make parenting extremely challenging. Much more rare is help with parenting a child with multiple problem areas. The topics covered are divided into three parts. Part One, "Emotional Disturbances, Where It All Begins," provides a background, a method of formulating the battle lines of working with challenging children, and addresses the primary causes of emotional disturbances. Part Two, "Behavioral Disturbances--There Is More than Meets the Eye," has less of a focus on causes and discusses the challenges of working with serious behavior problems. Part Three, "Advanced Parenting Skills and Challenges," is an attempt to cover the many other possible problem areas and potential combinations of difficulties. Part Three includes both specifics in many areas and general methods of dealing with challenges not covered in detail. Three appendixes include the Inappropriate Sexual Behavior Scale, the Juvenile Sex Offender Risk Assessment Matrix, and the Attachment Disorder Assessment Scale. (Contains 84 references.) (GCP)
