Processes Used by Illinois Public School Boards When Hiring a Superintendent
Lemon, Lonny
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Western Illinois University
The purpose of the study is to add to the body of literature on the hiring processes utilized by public school boards of educations in filling the position of the superintendent. Hiring superintendents is one of the most important and challenging duties of a school board. This study will focus on the personal interview, selection methodology, and decision-making processes utilized by public school boards of education. The researcher will analyze the selection process utilized by public school boards of education in hiring their superintendent. Hiring the superintendent can affect the educational system in a community, for good or bad, for many years. Boards unwilling to invest time may soon find themselves given a second opportunity to repeat the process. Public school boards of education continue to use a selection process that may be neither reliable nor valid, especially for the selection of the crucial position of superintendent. The final interview is the trickiest part of the hiring process. Most board members have little experience in hiring a top executive. Be careful or you might hire the best interviewer, not the best person for the job. The final vote for employing a superintendent must be made based upon an alignment between the candidate's knowledge and skills and the needs identified by the district. The study will provide public school boards of education with information on hiring practices that may increase the likelihood of employing the right person. The researcher will use two methodologies to obtain data. Subjects (school board presidents or vice-presidents whose district hired a new superintendent for school year (2010-2011 or 2011-12) will complete an online survey using the Survey Monkey tool. The survey will include 5 sections. Next, to triangulate the data, a telephone interview will be conducted with a sample of the same group that completed the online surveys. The knowledge gained from this survey may result in a better understanding of our current superintendent hiring practices. These data may then result in better decisions being made for the most important position within a school district.
