America Becoming: Racial Trends and Their Consequences. Volume II. [Proceedings of the Research Conference on Racial Trends in the United States (Washington, D.C., October 15-16, 1998)].
Smelser, Neil J., Ed.; Wilson, William Julius, Ed.; Mitchell, Faith, Ed.
This collection of papers explores past and current trends among African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, and Native Americans in the context of a white majority. The papers, presented at the 1998 Research Conference on Racial Trends in the United States, provide analyses of racial and social dynamics and recommendations for future research. The book details demographic changes that have moved America beyond black and white into a complex multiethnic environment. The 15 papers include: (1) "Racial Trends in the Administration of Criminal Justice" (Randall Kennedy); (2) "Race and Criminal Justice" (Alfred Blumstein); (3) "Commentary on Randall Kennedy's Overview of the Justice System" (Darnell F. Hawkins); (4) "Race and Ethnicity in the Labor Market: Trends over the Short and Long Term" (James P. Smith); (5) "Racial Differences in Labor Market Outcomes among Men" (Harry J. Holzer); (6) "Racial Trends in Labor Market Access and Wages: Women" (Cecilia A. Conrad); (7) "Ethnic and Racial Differences in Welfare Receipt in the United States" (Robert A. Moffitt and Peter T. Gottschalk); (8) "Labor Force Trends: The Military as Data" (John Sibley Butler and Charles C. Moskos); (9) "Trends in Minority-Owned Businesses" (Thomas D. Boston); (10) "Wealth and Racial Stratification" (Melvin L. Oliver and Thomas M. Shapiro); (11) "Racial and Ethnic Differences in Health: Recent Trends, Current Patterns, Future Directions" (Raynard S. Kington and Herbert W. Nickens); (12) "Racial and Ethnic Trends in Children's and Adolescents' Behavior and Development" (Vonnie C. McLoyd and Betsy Lozoff); (13) "The Health of Minority Children in the Year 2000: The Role of Government Programs in Improving the Health Status of America's Children" (Renee R. Jenkins); (14) "Racial Variations in Adult Health Status: Patterns, Paradoxes, and Prospects" (David R. Williams); and (15) "Health-Care Use in the Veterans Health Administration: Racial Trends and the Spirit of Inquiry" (Eugene Z. Oddone, Laura A. Peterson, and Morris Weinberger).
