Inviter? Comment? (Invite? How?).
Bernet, Ivelyse Artaud; del Rey, Maria Isabel Consuegra
A study analyzed one form of speech act in the instructional materials entitled "De Vive Voix." The speech act in question was the invitation to someone to do something. The ways that the invitation is presented, possible variations, and how to make this rich and useful form more available to the student for communicative purposes are examined. First, the statements in the texts corresponding to this speech act, explicitly or implicitly, are inventoried. They are then classified according to their form (imperative, interrogative, or expressive). The relationship of each speech act with other speech acts is examined, and the need to teach students appropriate responses is discussed. Use of different registers to issue the same invitation is briefly addressed. Useful classroom exercises for practicing invitations are suggested. The lists of invitations identified in the instructional materials are appended. (MSE)
