Ralleyball: A Tennis Intramural Activity
Cramer, Stanley J.; Duncan, Lisa
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v17 n5 p17-19 May-Jun 2004
Physical education teachers often look for ways to bring any activity to life and give it meaning with all-out participation from students. To showcase the talents of each sports-enthusiast-students, schools facilitate an intramural activity. The authors of this article present an intramural program titled Ralleyball, which is an ideal way to connect classroom teaching and extracurricular sport in order to achieve effective learning. Ralleyball is tennis minus the two areas of greatest difficulty (scoring and serving). Many people continue to be misguided in their belief that one's strokes must be technically developed before they can play a game of tennis. This is an antiquated concept. The emphasis of Ralleyball is to get kids playing at a very early stage. With a larger, high-density foam ball (such as the Dunlop Speedball) that bounces like a real tennis ball but is much slower in flight, children are able to rally the ball 5 to 6 times over the net within thirty seconds. Speedballs and other game modifications deemed appropriate by the teacher can also be used during play. And, students who develop some skill can compete in intramural tournaments, such as those organized and funded by USA Team Tennis. Ralleyball students have gone on to play for park and recreation tennis programs. Many parents are so thrilled with their child's enthusiasm that they sign up themselves for adult programs, thus allowing them to learn, practice and play with their children. (Contains 1 figure.)
