Teaching and Coaching Tennis Using System 5
Helfrich, Janet
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v20 n2 p7-13 Nov-Dec 2006
The United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) has developed a universal language for tennis instruction entitled System 5: The Five Keys to Tennis, which is extremely easy to teach and learn and covers court positioning, strategy, and stroke selection. Many professional tennis instructors have used System 5 since its inception but USPTA nonmembers are generally unaware of this system. Once the theory and information from these teaching and learning concepts are understood, communication between the tennis teacher/coach and the student/athlete becomes very easy and direct. This article explains the basic concepts of System 5 for physical education teachers and tennis coaches. Professional teachers and coaches will not only be able to use these concepts when teaching and coaching tennis, but will also be able to see how these concepts can easily be adapted to teaching and coaching other skills and sports.
