Engaging Students Regarding Special Needs in Technology and Engineering Education
White, David W.
Technology and Engineering Teacher, v75 n2 p8-12 Oct 2015
In 1984, James Buffer and Michael Scott produced the book "Special Needs Guide for Technology Education" (Buffer and Scott, 1984). This was a pivotal offering insofar as it set the stage for technology education educators, at the time, to think about and be provided with information regarding students with special needs in their classrooms. Throughout the proceeding years, several wonderful articles have been written with regard to students with special needs in technology and engineering environments. They include Evanciew's (2003) article, which outlines the infusion of students with special needs in technology education classrooms and how these students can be accommodated. Further, Yuill (2008) provided an article that offers a game design project targeted for students with special needs in his classroom. While these offerings are geared toward the concepts of how technology and engineering educators can assist students with special needs in their classrooms, this article discusses how students without disabilities can participate in a project that attempts to emulate how people with certain disabilities might feel doing a simple technology and engineering activity.
