Teachers Critique the Curriculum: Frame Factors at Play
Poetter, Thomas S.
Kappa Delta Pi Record, v43 n2 p82-87 Win 2007
This paper is the collaborative effort of students in a course called EDL 646: Curriculum for Teaching, a professional course for graduate students in education, composed mostly of teachers in public schools engaged in various master's degree programs. One goal of the course is to introduce students to the task of curriculum analysis. Here, the author uses Posner's book "Analyzing the Curriculum" (2004) to organize a major project in which students analyze a curriculum they are using in their schools or are considering for adoption. Another goal is to examine how more progressive practices can be incorporated into today's public school classrooms, especially in the subject areas of the typical school, including math, science, social studies, language arts, and the arts. The author gives details of their class project and discusses two frame factors themes, namely: (1) personal frame factor; and (2) cultural frame factor. ["Teachers Critique the Curriculum: Frame Factors at Play" was written with Greg Beherns, Tyra Bowling, Sarah Davis, Shane Estep, Jennifer Fox, Jonathan Hamilton, Tara Hendel, Angela Lauer, Drew McKnight, Lucinda Roberts, Julie Summers, Barrett Swope, and Mary Wessling.]
