Recruitment and Retention with a Spin

Strategic planning and innovation at Bismarck State College (BSC) found common ground in the college's goal to recruit and retain employees in an environment of low unemployment and strong competition for skilled employees. BSC's strategic plan for 2007-09 included the objective "to increase retention of employees." One of the strategies connected to that objective was to "Develop a talent recruiting and retention plan that attracts and retains highly qualified employees who are enthusiastic about education and service to the BSC community, and that responds to employee needs and desires, making BSC a preferred employer in the Bismarck-Mandan area." BSC has developed a talent recruiting and retention plan that attracts and retains highly qualified employees who are enthusiastic about education and service to the campus and beyond. The plan includes an innovative twist that is literally spinning spaces to create a lot of smiling faces. Positive results accrued after only one year of beginning implementation of BSC's Recruitment and Retention Plan. A highlight was the college's selection as one of the top 10 places for young people to work in Bismarck, an annual award of the Young Professionals Network. Quantifiable outcomes of the initiative are presented.
