Young SAT-Takers: Two Surveys. Survey I: Young SAT-Takers and Their Parents. Survey II: Test-Taking History for 1980-81 Young SAT-Takers. College Board Report No. 88-1.
Wilder, Gita; And Others
Two surveys were conducted to determine the impact of administration of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) to students under 14 years of age. Survey I provided data from 1,846 students tested in January 1984, and on their parents; there were 1,606 parent-student matches among respondents (i.e., student and parent questionnaires from the same household). Students were 13 years old or younger when they took the SAT as junior high school students. Data are reported on student demography, self-reported comparisons with peers, motivation for taking the SAT, invitations to and participation in talent search activities, and student and parent attitudes toward the experience. Students and their parents evaluated the experience of taking the SAT positively. Survey II analyzed test scores and other information for over 44,000 1980-81 test-takers (under 14 years old when they took the SAT) to examine their results through 1985-86, the year these students completed high school. Most of the data were taken from 30,000 students who were traced into high school. This longitudinal study provides data on testing history of the sample, the talent search students, and college-bound seniors. Thirty data tables are included. The student and parent questionnaires for Survey I are appended. (TJH)
