Teaching Taekwondo through Mosston's Spectrum of Styles
Na, Jaekwon
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (JOPERD), v80 n2 p32-38 Feb 2009
Martial arts have recently gained the attention of physical educators as a viable activity in their physical education curriculum. However, physical education teachers may have difficulty teaching martial arts because they have little pedagogical content knowledge and no experience, and because they perceive martial arts to be dangerous and difficult to teach. The purpose of this article is to (1) provide physical education teachers with a rationale and background for teaching taekwondo, focusing on the physical, psychological, and possible multicultural benefits of martial arts; and (2) to describe how Mosston's spectrum of styles can assist in teaching taekwondo. (Contains 1 table and 3 figures.)
