Emergency Preparedness Education: An Overview.
Stoffel, Robert, Ed.; LaValla, Patrick, Ed.
The book is a collection of emergency preparedness instruction materials. It starts with the first chapter of "Living Life's Emergencies" by Robert Stoffel and Patrick LaValla which introduces emergency preparedness education, focusing on six major components (human body management, defensive living, time lag, disaster and civil preparedness, preventive search and rescue, and survival) and four primary areas of needed emphasis (individual responsibility, school education, government, business and industry). The second item in the collection is an outline for a 60-hour course curriculum for teachers of emergency preparedness. It includes an introduction, an orientation to emergency services, emergency response, organizing for survival management, physiological effects of temperature, protective environments, heat sources, food and water, emergency preparedness kits, emergency travel, leadership, government response, improvising, natural and man caused emergencies, school disaster planning, and teaching aids and techniques. Next, a paper which has been used for curriculum design discusses the fact that every major academic discipline contains concepts relevant to preparedness education. This is followed by an outline of a manual for establishing emergency preparedness courses at the college level for teacher training and includes information such as necessary administrative details, checklists, public relations, and fee details. The book also includes information regarding an 8-hour aviation emergency preparedness and survival course. The book concludes with information about resources for other materials about emergency preparedness. (SB)
