TLC: The Experience Matters
Steele, William; Kuban, Caelan
Reclaiming Children and Youth, v20 n4 p24-27 Win 2012
Only as adults witness the world experienced by traumatized children can they develop appropriate interventions that lead to healing and resilience. This article highlights the philosophy and programs of the National Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children. The National Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children (TLC) was founded in 1990 by William Steele. From its inception, TLC approached trauma not as a diagnosis but as an event which alters the way traumatized children experience themselves, others, and the world. These traumatic events are the force driving survival-based behavior. Changing that behavior requires changing experience. Unless interventions alter the subjective experiences of traumatized children, their primary survival behaviors of fight, flight, and freeze will persist.
