Teaching about Consumerism through Stories
Haas, Kay Parks
English Journal, v99 n3 p14-15 Jan 2010
One of the best methods in the English language arts classroom is to educate students through the world of stories. The beauty of storytelling is that it often has a more powerful impact on young adults than a didactic lecture or a textbook chapter. Many times students would say that they internalize a message much more willingly through reading a book about characters going through the same situations. Teaching teens about consumerism should be no different. Discussing and writing about stories that deal with consumerism may help to make a difference. In this article, the author recommends four literature titles that address consumerism: (1) "Everything Is Not Enough" (Sandy Asher); (2) "The Gospel According to Larry" (Janet Tashjian); (3) "Feed" (M. T. Anderson); and (4) "1984" (George Orwell).
