RAMAS: The RITL Automated Management System. Master Control and Periodicals Control Subsystems. Stockholm Papers in Library and Information Science.
Ya-chun, Lian
An automated minicomputer-based library management system is being developed at the Swedish Royal Institute of Technology Library (RITL). RAMAS (the RITL Automated Management System) currently deals with periodical check-in, claiming, index-handling, and binding control. A RAMAS bibliographic record can be accessed from eight different points (e.g., International Standard Serial Number/ISSN, title key, full title), and the check-in display shows full information on recent issues (e.g., arrival dates, claiming dates, double issues). Claiming letters and binding notices are controlled by parameters characteristic of each journal. The RAMAS bibliographic file includes the full Swedish Union Catalog of Scientific and Technical Serials/Periodicals (LIST TECH) and can be continuously updated as an online reference tool. The bibliographic main file has been extended to accept transformed records from the Swedish National Research Library System (LIBRIS) and further development is in progress towards an integrated system which will be used for online acquisition, check-in, circulation, and catalog operations dealing with monographs, periodicals, serials, conference proceedings, and multivolume works. The report provides (1) an introductory preface by Stephan Schwarz; (2) an article describing RAMAS; (3) appendices outlining RAMAS data structure and record formats; (4) a brief survey of the RAMAS programs; and (5) flow diagrams for the RAMAS Master Control and Periodicals Control Subsystems.
