A Technology Approach to Improving Process Management
Dray, Lori; Strasburger, Tom
School Business Affairs, v79 n4 p8-10 Apr 2013
It is impossible to ignore how technology is infiltrating education. Interactive projectors and other technologies give teachers and students the opportunity to bring lessons to life. Some districts are replacing textbooks with digital content, allowing students to interact with content in new ways. Galion City School District in Galion, Ohio, is a prime example of a district using technology to its full potential to manage processes and information more effectively. The district created a parent portal that houses information for parents to view at their convenience; the district no longer incurs the cost of printing and sending documents home. The district also created a student portal that gives access to everything from educational apps and games to tips for operating district technology and bullying prevention tools. A one-to-one computing program for a large portion of the student body ensures that every student in grades 3-5 has a tablet computer for school and home use and students in grades 6-9 have laptops. The success of those technology-based programs led decision makers to consider how technology can be used to streamline and automate central office operations. One area of focus was regulatory compliance requirements. Galion City Schools began to use several web-based management systems. One system for all regulatory compliance requirements not only maintains all records online and eliminates paper storage, it also manages the schedule and automatically alerts designated key contacts when various central-office functions need to be completed. The other system manages safety and student behavior issues. The widespread use of technology in the classrooms and in the administrative offices has solidified Galion City Schools' belief in the power of technology. According to Kathleen Jenney, superintendent for Galion City Schools, "The expanded use of technology has enabled the district to operate more efficiently and streamline our information management systems." The district's processes, learning, and management have all been improved by well-thought-out technology implementations.
