English Language Teaching Profile: Syrian Arab Republic.
British Council, London (England). English-Teaching Information Centre.
The status of English as a first foreign language is discussed as well as the reasons why the standard of English and the extent to which it is spoken in Syria do not match its official status. The use of English within the educational system is examined with particular reference to secondary and university levels. The manner of determination of syllabuses and hours of instruction, inspection, English for special purposes, adult education, and English by radio and television are dealt with. The make-up of the teaching cadre is described as well as teaching materials, private language schools, and British and American support. An appendix contains syllabuses from the schools and universities. A supplementary outline of the current status of literary education and of the literary scene in general accompanies the profile.
