Nurturing the Child Scientist
Rodgers, Lisa; Basca, Belinda
Science and Children, v49 n3 p53-55 Nov 2011
The natural world fascinates young children. Treasured leaves, shells, stones, and twigs always find their way into the kindergarten classroom. A kindergarten study of collections channels and deepens children's innate impulse to explore and collect. It also lays the foundation for understanding how scientists approach the study of objects in nature. In this article, the authors share one example from their "Collections From Nature" study in which the children recorded their findings in their science notebooks. The article concludes with some tips to remember when implementing science notebooks with kindergarten students. (Contains 2 figures and 2 online resources.)
