College Housing Dissertations: A Bounded Qualitative Meta-Study
Banning, James H.; Kuk, Linda
Journal of College and University Student Housing, v37 n2 p90-105 2011
The purpose of this study was to examine dissertations that were published in the U.S. during the past 5 years that related to collegiate housing. The dissertations were examined using a bounded qualitative meta-analysis approach. Each dissertation was examined using three questions: What were the methods/attributes of the research? What were the theories that guided the research? And what were the findings in terms of topics? The topical analysis revealed five major topics: learning communities, multicultural issues, staffing issues, student success, and administrative and technology issues. The discussion of the findings focused on the continuing evidence that the collegiate housing experience is a positive one for students, housing research continues to address the important issue of diversity, and administrative and technology issues continue to be important research topics. The study concludes by pointing out missing topics in the current dissertation research effort: construction and renovation, special population needs, parental involvement, and the concept of sense of place.
