A Path of Their Own
Isaacson, Karen L. J.
Understanding Our Gifted, v20 n4 p16-18 Sum 2008
Gifted kids often share a list of common traits, but ultimately, they are individuals. They have their own strengths, their own weaknesses, and their own needs. One trait that many gifted children "do" share is asynchrony. In other words, gifted children may not follow a typical age appropriate time line. They may be markedly advanced, average, or even behind in developmental areas. In this article, the author discusses her five gifted children and how she deals with their different personalities. The author reminds parents that the more they know about giftedness, the better equipped they will be to understand that aspect of their child's nature. The more they know and understand their children as "individuals," giftedness, warts, and all, the better they will be able to help them reach their own potential and become healthy and successful adults.
