Millions of current and prospective college students fail to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) annually for a number of reasons. One common obstacle students face is the complexity of the FAFSA which prevents students from completing the federal application. This study examined whether or not a multimedia tutorial can help students and parents complete the FAFSA and if this same tool can reduce the workload of financial aid administrators across the country. The study was conducted using two national financial aid listservs to solicit responses to an electronic survey from higher education institutions that have used the FAFSA tutorial titled, "Seven Easy Steps to the FAFSA: A Student's Guide to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid." The survey was completed by 48 higher education institutions. Based on feedback and responses from professional financial aid administrators, the findings indicate that this tutorial did help students and parents with the financial aid application process. Higher education institutions used the FAFSA tutorial in a number of ways, including in the recruitment of students, training their staff members on the steps to completing the FAFSA, and to cut down on the number of errors they were required to correct. Over half of the respondents indicated that the tutorial allowed a shift in resources resulting in a reduced workload. The data, however, were inconclusive as to whether or not it cut down on the number of corrections financial aid administrators needed to make to students' financial aid files. The findings would suggest that the "Seven Easy Steps to the FAFSA: A Student's Guide to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid" tutorial offers a number of measurable benefits for students, parents and higher education institutions.
