However, the university's confident quest to add the high-profile sport even in the current economic climate has drawn sharp criticism from two former leaders of the University of North Carolina system, William C. Friday and C.D. Spangler Jr., both of whom have spoken publicly against the venture. But supporters of the plan count on the fervor of many alumni and Charlotte residents to help meet the goal. Much of the plan's success depends on fund raisers' ability to reach donors who have never contributed to the university before.
