In a Tough Economy, Charlotte Makes a Play for Football
Sander, Libby
Chronicle of Higher Education, v55 n12 pA18 Nov 2008
Despite tough economic times, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte hopes to win trustees' approval to raise funds to field a Division I-AA football team. Athletics officials and supporters at Charlotte are hopeful that they will raise the more than $45-million in capital expenses necessary to get the program up and running. However, the university's confident quest to add the high-profile sport even in the current economic climate has drawn sharp criticism from two former leaders of the University of North Carolina system, William C. Friday and C.D. Spangler Jr., both of whom have spoken publicly against the venture. But supporters of the plan count on the fervor of many alumni and Charlotte residents to help meet the goal. Much of the plan's success depends on fund raisers' ability to reach donors who have never contributed to the university before.
