Themed Space
Lynch, Christopher O.
Communication Teacher, v24 n3 p155-159 Jul 2010
This article presents a classroom activity that introduces students to the concept of themed space. Students learn to think critically about the spaces they encounter on a regular basis by analyzing existing spaces and by working in groups to create their own themed space. This exercise gives students the chance to see the relevance of critical rhetoric as a tool to understand their world, to be more conscious about marketers' efforts to influence them, and to uncover ethical ways to use themed space to assist organizations they support. Shapers of cultural industries have been mindful that the space around them can create moods and promote ideologies by suggesting core values through themes or stories present within the organization and design of the space. A list of references and suggested readings is included.
