A teaching/learning plan designed to provide the elementary classroom teacher with an overview of the geography, environment, culture, and people of Southeast Asia includes five sections on the following subjects: geography, animals, plants, social roles and occupations, and religion. Through the use of folk tales from each of six Southeast Asian countries, the class becomes involved in each subject and learns how to verify information, draw proper conclusions, and synthesize data from various sources. Each child reads folk tales with the object of extracting data relevant to the subject areas. This information is substantiated and enlarged upon when the child further researches the subject in reference sources. After this research experience, the class, either as individuals or in groups, proceeds to other exercises to deepen its knowledge of the subjects. The countries studied are Burma, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. The teaching/learning plan of activities, content, objectives, evaluations, and questions is in the basic format that was developed and field-tested over a two-year period with sixth graders. A selected bibliography focuses on folk tales written for children, children's sources of information on Southeast Asia and specific countries, and general works that may be utilized by the teacher and children.
