The Taming of the Jew: "The Merchant of Venice" Is No Laughing Matter
Beck, Bernard
Multicultural Perspectives, v7 n4 p30-32 Oct 2005
A new movie version of Shakespeare's classic troubling comedy, "The Merchant of Venice" (Brokaw, Cowan, Navidi, Piette, & Radford, 2004), has appeared, bringing up an ancient issue of the possible bigotry of the greatest writer in the English language. Shakespeare's plays about minority characters in the Venetian Republic have caused more and more distress over the centuries, as condemnation of racism and anti-Semitism has become a commonplace. The author examines the social and historical context of the movie and the old story.
