A Qualitative Content Analysis of Sexual Abuse Prevention and Awareness Programming in Texas Private School Athletics
Naterman, Shane
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Texas Wesleyan University
The purpose of this study is to determine to what extent private school athletic administrators have implemented programming specifically aimed at combatting the problem of childhood sexual abuse in sport. The study examined published policies and procedures overseen by private school athletic administrators to determine to what extent their programming contains elements of sexual abuse awareness and prevention consistent with published best practices. Specifically, the policies were compared to the best practices outlined by the International Olympic Committee's SafeSport program. A qualitative content analysis was utilized in this research as a means of systematically coding written data in an effort to answer the explicit research questions identified for this study. The results of this study indicate that while private school administrators appear to be implementing a number of strategies consistent with the recommended best practices of sexual abuse prevention in sport, overall there is a failure on the part of private school administrators to systematically implement comprehensive sexual abuse prevention programming. Discussion follows the study with suggestions for private school administrators to consider as they commit to protecting students and their institutions from the devastation associated with incidents of sexual abuse.
