Postsecondary Outcomes for Students with Intellectual Disabilities
Farnham, Lindsey Beth
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Teachers College, Columbia University
A survey of 89 post secondary youth with intellectual impairments exiting a college based school-to-work program tracked school and post school experiences to identify significant correlates and predictors of post school outcomes. The three significant predictors were self-determination training, course taking patterns, and home care skills training. Several school experiences were also predictors over respondent characteristics. However, when these outcomes were compared with those reported by the National Transition Longitudinal Study, notable differences were evident. For example, respondents in this study who attended school-to-work programs experienced outcomes that were comparable to those experienced by respondents from the NLTS on independent living, quality of life, and health related indicators. However, they lagged in the outcome comparisons for employment, transportation, community integration, and self-determination. The study also identified other benefits associated with attending a college that has a school-to-work program.
