Is the Process the Problem? Impact of Selection Methods on Reported Job Satisfaction among Academic Department Chairs
Fairchild, Julie E.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
The problem of low job satisfaction (JS) among academic department chairs (ADC) may result from the selection process. ADC searches seldom comply with best practices for hiring or are predictive of a good fit. Formal searches are seldom used. Some incumbents did not want the job. Research into the history, nature, and problems of the position revealed low levels of ADC JS are common throughout North American colleges and universities. This study demonstrated the efficacy of mixed methods research in that the quantitative findings cannot be generalized, but the qualitative phase produced valuable results. Three elements of ADC selection emerged from the responses of current ADCs to qualitative and quantitative survey queries: the incumbent's plan to serve, a formalized selection process, and faculty involvement. A willing candidate; a formal, generally accepted process; and empowered faculty result in higher levels of JS among ADCs.
