A Program for Improving Documentation. CDC Technical Report No. 6.
Steinberg, Erwin R.
A program for improving documentation at the systems division at Allen-Bradley is sketched in this paper. Following introductory material about starting the program, the paper outlines the two main projects that were involved: (1) a management study of the Allen-Bradley manual writing process, which addressed problems with the content and presentation of information in company manuals, training of technical writers, enforcement of the company's document tracking and style guidelines, and needed critical documentation; and (2) a "Handbook for Manual Writers" with chapters on planning the manual, audience analysis, composing the draft, designing the layout and graphics, testing by user edits, writing and editing, and standards of usage and style. In addition, the paper discusses briefly the style guidelines for vendors, quality control, and the seal of the Communications Design Center. (EL)
