American Biology Teacher, v70 n6 p336-341 Aug 2008
The "Living Environment Regents Examination" is meant to provide a measure of the quality of New York State students' knowledge and understanding of biological content and science inquiry ability, as it is defined in the "MST Standards" and the "Living Environment Core Curriculum". This article examines the degree to which the inquiry behaviors called for by MST Standard 1 are assessed by the "Living Environment Regents Examinations" administered since the introduction of Part D in June 2004. This research evaluates the effectiveness of this large-scale exam as a measure of science inquiry as it is defined in the "MST Standards". It also offers suggestions to educators in New York and other states as they review and improve their testing methods. (Contains 2 tables and 2 figures.)
