From Socrates to Cyberspace: Enhancing Teaching and Learning through Technology
Schnackenberg, Heidi L.; Maughan, Margaret D.; Zadoo, Elizabeth
Journal of Faculty Development, v20 n1 p21-30 2004
This initiative attempted to promote university faculties' use of technology in their teaching practice by equipping them with the latest techniques and instructional strategies. Faculty participants were given an initial workshop with a noted educational technology expert and then subsequently paired with a student partner with whom they were to develop a technology-enhanced lesson plan. At the end of two semesters, participating faculty implemented lessons that integrated technology ranging from utilizing a course website to engaging in online discussion forums. The most intriguing implication of this research was that although only four faculty members were able to complete a lesson, over 100 students were reached among the various classes taught by these professors. When contemplating faculty professional development, it is most important to remember that even if only some faculty members engage in these programs, many students can benefit from the knowledge and skills that their professors acquire.
