The Central Hardwoods Virtual Forest Version 2.0. [CD-ROM].
Indiana Univ.-Purdue Univ., Indianapolis.; Indiana State Dept. of Natural Resources, Indianapolis.; EcoLogik Inc., Indianapolis, IN.
This CD-ROM is the second in a series of CDs allowing students to explore the trees and animals of the northern boreal forest. Using QuickTime Virtual Reality (QTVR), the Central Hardwood Virtual Forest is designed so that students are able to see views from inside the central hardwood forest and look up or down or spin around 360 degrees. The program allows students to become familiar with basic forestry techniques as well as practicing tree identification with an interactive dichotomous key. Students can view the tree they are identifying and also move a branch of that tree in any direction to see all of the features. They can even zoom in on tiny lateral buds. In addition to tree identification, students can watch over 50 QuickTime movies about topics ranging from bear habitat to recycling, all addressed by experts within their field. Also included are a scavenger hunt, puzzles, and word games. (MM)
