Changing Ourselves, Changing Our Programs
Carter, Margie
Exchange: The Early Childhood Leaders' Magazine Since 1978, n200 p64-67 Jul-Aug 2011
The author is fascinated about the notion of "the changer and the changed." Having change imposed upon everyone can be difficult and one can become resistant. On the other hand, having an inspirational encounter can excite one about making change. When people initiate some new actions, what drives that change? How do they become changed in the process? Many people have worked tirelessly to professionalize the early childhood field, to set standards for quality, and to educate policymakers and the public about the importance of children's early years. They've made some definite progress, despite their dismal failure to get overall financing and decent salaries addressed. Current trends indicate that the focus for change in the early childhood field is centered on quality rating scales. Before starting to rush around and try to "fix" things, one should be reminded that the amazing thing about changing one's self is that it usually leads to others changing.
