Gifted Ethnic Minority Student Participation in Pre-Collegiate STEM Programs: How to Become a STEM Parent
Grantham, Tarek C.; Henfield, Malik S.
Parenting for High Potential, p10-15 Mar 2011
Today, there are more program options in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) than ever before. Because people are living in an age of increasing globalization, advocates of gifted children must understand that involvement in STEM fields is paramount for the children to be competitive in the job market and for the nation to thrive. As parents of gifted children, the authors recognize the importance of providing interesting, fun, and challenging STEM experiences for them. They believe that more parents, particularly those of gifted ethnic minority students (GEMS), should be aware of and involved in pre-collegiate STEM programs. In addition, they believe that a large body of advocates, regardless of ethnic background, who serve as surrogate parents, mentors, extended family, heroes, or she-roes in the lives of GEMS should empower them to reach their full potential. This article discusses the importance of involving more GEMS in STEM experiences and offers recommendations for specific STEM opportunities for students enrolled in pre-K to high school.
