An Examination of Characteristics Related to the Social Skills of Youths with Visual Impairments
Zebehazy, Kim T.; Smith, Thomas J.
Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness, v105 n2 p84-95 Feb 2011
From an early age, children with visual impairments can be at a disadvantage for developing social skills. Since vision plays a role in the early development of social behaviors and of social cognition, the lack of visual cues could lead to difficulties in initiating and maintaining social interactions. The study presented here investigated factors that are related to social skills measures of youths with visual impairments. It found that participation in extracurricular activities and paid work experiences, as well as the age of onset of visual impairments, were significantly related to differences in the participants' scores on the Social Skills Rating System.
