Study of Job Satisfaction among Elementary School Teachers in Shanghai

Teacher job satisfaction, as an important index of school efficacy, has drawn the attention of education administrators and researchers. In recent years, Chen Yunying and Sun Shaobang (1994), Feng Bolin (1996), and Chen Weiqi (1998) have conducted studies of job satisfaction among secondary and elementary school teachers in such places as Beijing, Tianjin, and Guangzhou. Their different research instruments, subjects, locations, and times of research have produced great differences in their results, making comparison difficult. In Shanghai, with its rapidly developing economy and education, job satisfaction among elementary school teachers engaged in basic education is a matter of concern. This paper presents a research which studied elementary school teachers in Shanghai. The teachers were selected teachers from different training classes for elementary school teachers in twelve districts--Jingan, Minxing, Xuhui, Baoshan, Putuo, Changning, Nanshi, Pudong, Zhabie and Yangpu [sic. Only ten districts are listed--Trans.], with one to five people from each school. In obtaining the sample, attention was given to the distribution of districts in which the schools are situated and the teachers' gender and age. Altogether 530 questionnaires were distributed; 486 were returned and 461 were used. This study began in December 1998 and ended in March 1999. (Contains 2 tables.)
