Promoting Excellence: Some Classroom Evaluation Alternatives.
Sia, Archibald P.; Sydnor, Darlean
Following a brief overview of literature on excellence in the classroom, the shortcomings of objective tests as means for evaluating classroom excellence are discussed as well as the need for evaluation alternatives. Descriptions are given of evaluation alternatives, some of which focus upon reading and writing achievement: (1) observation of actual task performance; (2) documentation of student work samples; (3) use of rating scales; (4) assessment of writing samples; (5) student workbooks; (6) student debriefing after a lesson; (7) role playing and simulation games; (8) performance checklists; (9) case studies and anecdotal records; (10) interviews; and (11) questionnaires and opinionnaires. A three-page list of references and tables that illustrate some of the evaluation methods conclude the document. (JD)
