A Descriptive Study of the Outdoor Recreation Programs and Services Provided by Selected U.S. Colleges and Universities.
Branson, Paul S.
Twenty selected college and university outdoor programs are grouped along the points of Blaesing's "Continuum of Outdoor Program Delivery Systems" in this guide to planning, development, and modification of outdoor programming. Grouping was done on the basis of questionnaire responses by institutions according to these primary variables: degree of student leadership desired, organization/program continuity, implications for institutional liability, available staff support, and amount of participant input desired in program initiation/planning. Under each program type, the guide gives a synopsis of basic features and a description of each school program. Program types and colleges under them are Cooperative Wilderness Adventures--universities of Oregon, Idaho, Oregon State, Washington State, California at Davis, California at Irvine; Coordinated Outing/Outdoor Clubs--universities of California Polytechnic State at San Luis Obispo, Pittsburgh, Wisconsin at Madison; Individual Outing Clubs--none; Canned (Pre-Packaged) Programs--universities of California at Los Angeles, West Virginia, Arizona, California State at San Bernardino, and Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology; Credit Courses--Fort Steilacoom Community College, Earlham College; Commercial Programs (Outward Bound)--University of North Carolina, Charlotte; No Programs--universities of California at Berkeley, San Francisco State; New Program--Central Michigan University. The appendix contains the questionnaire. (RS)
