Missouri Extension Provides Tax Assistance to Rural Families
Huston, Sandra J.; Procter, Brenda
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v98 n1 p67-68 2006
Financial education is one pathway to improving the human condition. Family financial educators in University Extension programs lead in their efforts to provide individuals and families with the skills they need to manage their financial resources effectively. Offering these opportunities at a time when families have money to manage is a key component in providing meaningful financial education; this is a particular challenge in working with lower income audiences. This article describes the Missouri Taxpayer Education Initiative (MoTax), a fully integrated extension project that seeks to assist people through (1) preparation and electronic filing of income tax returns and (2) financial education to help families maximize their tax refunds. The MoTax initiative helps to improve the human condition by removing barriers to information and resources by providing an alternative to costly loan, tax preparation, and filing fees, and by creating a valuable teaching opportunity. In addition, the MoTax is an important economic development tool for rural communities.
